Los Faroles in Huehueteango. Carlos´friends found the old wise women to cure him. The Farol in the middle.
We formed the theater group when Propaz invited a theatre group from San Mateo Ixtatán to participate in a National Play. We accepted this invitation and started to receive classes with Propaz. Our teacher, Josué Morales, came every Saturday for approximately three months to work with us. With him we created collectively our first play was performed first at the town hall of San Mateo and afterwards at a private school in the center of town. The third and last performance was at the municipal theatre in the capital of Huehuetenango. The goal of Propaz was to motivate youth to participate within their communities. We definitely represented our culture.
Our play Los Faroles was about a kid, Carlos, who was de-centered because he had no connection to his ancient culture. The young boy had strange dreams with the spirits of hate and fear when he was participating with other youth in the preparation of one of the most relevant Ixtatecan traditions at a regional event. The play shows how Carlos gets sick from the spirits of fear and hate. His friends finally find an old, wise women who cures him by using traditional medicine. She helped him to not only destroy the spirits which caught him, but to reconnect with his culture and himself as an active young man within his community.
